Facing risk of disturbances to public order, the prefect of Hérault François-Xavier Lauch, decided toban all demonstrations planned in Montpellier this Sunday June 23day of the 47th day of Jerusalem. Indeed, it marks the reunification of the holy city in 1967, frequently giving rise to tensions and potentially violent demonstrations. This decision results from an assessment of the national and international context, considered particularly sensitive.

“In view of the sensitivity of the national and international context, and in the face of the proven risks of disturbances to public order, the prefect of Hérault François-Xavier Lauch has decided to ban this Sunday, June 23, between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., any event organized in Montpellier on the Domaine de Grammont site and surrounding areas in accordance with the perimeter defined by decree,” specifies the Hérault prefecture in a press release this Thursday, June 20.

What are the penalties for offenders?

This measure aims to prevent the risk of confrontations between various groups and to ensure the safety of people and property. Organizers of unauthorized demonstrations face criminal sanctions, including up to 6 months in prison and a fine of 7,500 euros. Participants, for their part, risk a 4th class fine, or 135 euros.
