Not happy at all. Michel Barnier, former chief negotiator of the European Union for Brexit, does not appreciate at all that Emmanuel Macron obviously did not read his memoirs well, or even not at all, of which he had nevertheless provided him with a copy free three years ago. “The first chapter was written precisely by evoking what could happen in France», explained in an interview with Daily Telegraph the former minister of Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy.

“I regret that in my country, this warning was not heeded… on immigration, security, on the authority of the State and respect and development of the poorest corners of the country”he said. “I am convinced that we need to pay much more attention and show great respect to what people on the ground think in some very poor regions”he judges, adding that it is this lack of attention and respect which, “in the United Kingdom, largely explains the Brexit vote and I think we could experience the same thing in France.”

The decision to dissolve the National Assembly, “a decision that no one understands”, seems like a gamble “very risky”, explains Michel Barnier to the conservative British daily which supported Brexit. The former European commissioner warned that it was necessary “be very careful about what risks happening in France, whether it is the election of Marine Le Pen [à la présidence, ndlr] or an absolute majority for the far right” at the end of the second round of legislative elections on July 7.
