Tougher conditions for unemployed cross-border workers: What impact for Switzerland?

This is a proposal that brought employers and unions into agreement in on Thursday evening: reducing compensation for unemployed cross-border workers who have worked in Switzerland. Just like in Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium, by applying another calculation coefficient. New rules on unemployment insurance which would thus contribute to the 400 million euros in additional savings per year required by the government in this area.

A hard blow for border workers. To the point of considering a change of workplace or even accommodation? “It’s a measure that would not affect everyone in the same way,” underlines David Talerman, expatriation specialist and author of the book Working and living in Switzerland. Those who have had a job in Switzerland for a long time, a good salary and no dependent family could decide to settle in Switzerland. But those who work in low-skilled jobs or who have a lower income risk turning away from their work in Switzerland. A growing and significant proportion of the cross-border workers I support are already doing so, after having put all the elements into the balance.”
