Michel Messager, well known in our profession for having been Secretary General of the APST for around ten years and boss of the consulting company Consul'tours, is today known and recognized for being The Space Tourism Specialist, releases his 6th book: “Space Tourism & Insurance”.
Few works have dealt with such a subject, which nevertheless conditions future space tourists to attempt the adventure.
Indeed, in a society where the notions of Assistance and Reassurance are favored, particularly in the field of health, future space tourists, even if they have an “adventurous” spirit, also wish, at just in case… be assured.
« Without insurance, space tourism will not be able to develop» says Michel Messager.
Through more than 180 pages, the work deals with the history of space insurance, evaluates and describes the space insurance market, indicates the legislative and legal framework in which insurance must be located, the type of insurance that we can propose to astronaut customers the amount of premiums and the difficulties of offering space insurance at an affordable price and finally lists the main insurance providers in terms of space tourism.
A complete work on the subject, perfectly documented and easy to read, allowing you to have a real overview of the problem, especially since the year 2023 has been called by insurers in this area. of “annus horribilis” and that some have withdrawn from the market.
Note that this book is also full of anecdotes, for example, did you know that:
“A large number of insurers did not want, at that time, to cover – which may seem understandable – astronauts for a mission to the Moon (at least, at an affordable price) as this was considered too risky.
This is why, Neil Armstrong, commander of the Apollo 11 mission, decided before departure on July 16, 1969, to pre-sign around a hundred autographs on postcards.
If the mission went badly, one of his friends was responsible for giving them to his wife so that she could resell them.
Then it was the turn of his two flight companions, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins, to do the same.
This practice, called 'autographed mailings', signed by astronaut crews before their mission, began with Apollo 11 and ended with Apollo 16 in April 1972, with John Young, Charles Duke and Ken Mattingly . »
