It was a series of murders that marked all of Mayotte and particularly Petite-Terre. In January 2021, in three days, three men were murdered with a knife. Among them were two minors aged 14 and 16. At the time, the former mayor of Dzaoudzi-Labattoir, Saïd Omar Oili, spoke of “community war”.

Violent clashes also took place in the districts of Cétam and La Vigie, causing considerable damage. Tin huts and several vehicles were set on fire. An investigation was carried out and a gang called “Gotham” was arrested.

Since this Friday, the trial of 13 individuals aged between 32 and 12 years old at the time of the events has opened at the juvenile court. There are finally 7 of them to be tried by the Juvenile Assize Court until June 28. Four others will be tried soon, this time by the children’s court.

They are all being prosecuted for organized gang murder of a 15-year-old teenager. They face up to 30 years in prison. The two other murders committed during this nightmarish weekend will also be put on trial.
