The American space agency recently organized a large-scale role-playing game. This in fact simulated the arrival of a particularly dangerous asteroid heading towards our planet.

If a recent study estimates that Earth would be safe from an asteroid impact for at least 1000 years, this does not prevent NASA from preparing for the worst. This is increasing initiatives aimed at protecting our planet from such danger. For example, we count the DART missionwhich consisted of sending a spaceship to crash into a very real asteroid in order to change its trajectory.

But that’s not all. Indeed, NASA has set up a specialized service, the Planetary Defense Coordination Office. This department is responsible for anticipating a response to a potential threat from space.

NASA: a particularly arduous exercise

In this context, NASA collaborated with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to simulate the arrival of an asteroid threatening our planet. The conditions of the simulation are relatively simple: an imaginary asteroid has been spotted and 72% chance of hitting Earth in about 14 years.

However, to complicate the exercise, data such as the size and composition of the fictitious asteroid were not mentioned, making it more difficult to predict the effectiveness of an intervention. Indeed, the trajectory, shape, mass and composition are not always known to space agencies. Moreover, some asteroids may be temporarily obscured by the sunwhich makes the analysis of the latter all the more difficult.

NASA has already managed to deflect the trajectory of an asteroid via the DART mission, of course, but knowing precisely the characteristics. Regardless, Lindley Johnson, head of planetary defense at NASA, is reassuring.

This states: “ A large asteroid impact is potentially the only natural disaster against which humanity has the technology to predict years in advance and take action to prevent.. »
