Please note that prices for September 2024 are based on a three-week average instead of the standard monthly average. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) monitors price trends for staple foods in countries vulnerable to food insecurity. For each country and region covered by FEWS NET, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices for the current trading year for selected urban centers, and allowing the user to compare current trends both to five-year averages, which indicate seasonal trends, and to prices from the previous year.
Sorghum, millet, white corn and local and imported rice are the most important food products. Millet consumption is highest in the eastern and northern regions of the country. Local rice is another staple food, especially for poorer households. Imported rice and white corn are most commonly consumed in the capital and its surrounding areas. The Atrone market in N’Djamena, the capital, is the most important market for cereals.
Moundou is an important consumption center for sorghum and the second largest market after the capital. The Abéché market is located in a production area to the north. The Sarh market is both a local retail market and a cross-border market.
