NATO is not intervening in Ukraine for one reason, according to this senior Western official.
During his speech at the Prague Defense Summit, the head of NATO’s military committee returned to the main difference between the war in Ukraine and other conflicts in which the Atlantic Alliance ultimately intervened militarily.
“I am absolutely convinced that if the Russians did not have nuclear weapons, we would be in Ukraine and would have kicked them out. But they have nuclear weapons,” Rob Bauer was quoted as saying by Ukrainian media outlet Zerkalo Nedeli.
According to this admiral of the Royal Netherlands Navy, it is therefore obvious that if Russia were not a nuclear power, Alliance forces would already be deployed in Ukraine.
However, he does not rule out a possible participation of NATO armed forces in the war in Ukraine, while immediately adding that in this case the Alliance “would risk its survival as an organization.” But, according to the official, this is a more political question than a military one.
