a simple and comfortable urban helmet at a low price

Among the many urban bike helmets offered by Abus, the Xoxo stands out with its design inspired by board sports and an emphasis on wearing comfort, all at a low price.

In short:

  • The Abus Xoxo helmet is a simple and sober bicycle helmet, in a “bowl” format.
  • Sold for around €70 (and sometimes less), it combines an all-purpose design with sophisticated wearing comfort.
  • Interestingly, the recycling of its materials is made easier by its design.

The Abus range of urban helmets continues to expand and, for several months, the German brand has been offering the Xoxo. A fun name that hides a bowl helmet with a “skater” look, in keeping with the times.

Obviously playing on the look of the product, Abus offers it in several rather attractive colors: velvet black, polar white, aqua blue and mint green, each time with a nice little contrast provided by the straps. But the brand also emphasizes the protection provided by this helmet as well as its wearing comfort.

An effort on the padding

While it obviously meets the EN 1078 standard relating to bicycle helmets, necessary for its launch on the market, the Abus Xoxo adopts a fairly enveloping format – particularly on the back of the head. As for comfort, it is based on the use of thick, well-padded foam inside the helmet, as well as protection present at the closing buckle under the chin. Obviously removable and washable foams.

The headset is sleek and very simple to use. Note the absence of a tightening wheel at the rear. Instead, a slider holding system is offered. The “Y” formed by the strap around the ears is obviously adjustable to adapt to all body shapes. There is no LED lighting or nets protecting its 12 air inlets which are there to ventilate the head during exercise.

Easier to recycle

With a reasonable weight (400 grams in size M), this helmet is available in three sizes: S (51-55 cm head circumference); M (54-58cm) and L (57-61cm). Good point, its design allows the hard shell to be easily separated from the expanded polystyrene structure at the end of its life, to allow more efficient recycling of materials. Indeed, “in-mold” helmets on which these two parts are fused to the molding make recycling much more difficult.

The Abus Xoxo helmet is listed in stores at the recommended price of €70.95, but in reality you often find it sold for around €60 if not less.
