Water distribution gradually resumes this Wednesday morning from 6 a.m. in the south of Mayotte. However, certain middle and high schools remain closed and the prefecture maintains its surveillance. Due to a power outage on Monday evening, the Ouroveni water treatment plant suffered a water hammer.
The prefecture announced that water distribution would gradually resume this Wednesday, November 13 from six a.m. in the south of Mayotte. This Tuesday evening, this was already the case for Kani-Bé, Moinatrindri Bas, Musicale Plage and Mzouazia. However, some schools remain closed today: Kahani high school, Dembéni college, Tsararano high school, Chiconi college and the Bandrélé school campus. The rectorate must confirm during the day their reopening, planned at this stage for this Thursday.
This is following “an event of electrical origin which caused a technical incident” at the Ourovéni water treatment plant. According to our information, following a power cut Monday evening, the installations suffered a water hammer. In the space of a few seconds, the pressure became too strong and caused the pipes to implode. 700 cubic meters of water per hour poured out, washing away the retaining wall and part of the soil into the river.
Factory workers managed to restore the water thanks to a makeshift repair. Given the damage, it will still take several days or even weeks to completely repair it. The prefecture announces that it will maintain its departmental operational center, a system to bring together all the players and monitor developments in the situation. The Regional Health Agency has already announced that it will strengthen its compliance tests this week to ensure the potability of the water. While waiting for the results, residents are advised to boil water for at least five minutes before consuming it.
