Only racing events, record prize money… A new meeting circuit will see the light of day in 2025

Former track star Michael Johnson announced on Tuesday, one month before the Paris Olympic Games (July 26-August 11), the creation of an annual professional circuit of four meetings, called the “Grand Slam Track”. The program will begin in 2025 in the form of a pro circuit of four meetings held between April and September, two in the United States (including one in Los Angeles) and two internationally.

“This new league will revolutionize this sport and put athletics back in the spotlight. Finally, we will see the best compete more often than every four years”promises the one who has for years denounced the lack of professionalism and interest in athletics outside the Olympic Games.

Only races

The meetings, spread over three days, will only offer races, divided into six groups (short sprint, long sprint, high hurdles, low hurdles, middle distance and long distance), each group being available for women and men. The program will not include any jumps or throws.

“We have the biggest prize money in the history of athletics”

Each group will see eight athletes compete in two events per meeting (short sprint athletes will compete in a 100m and a 200m for example). For each group, the winner of a meeting will receive 100,000 dollars (93,115 euros), the second 50,000 dollars (46,500 euros) until the 8th with a bonus of 10,000 dollars (9,311 euros), for an endowment of more than 3 million dollars (2,793,000 euros) per competition.

“We have the biggest prize money in the history of athletics. These athletes deserve to be rewarded for their talent and their work. I am proud of the fact that in our first year, some female athletes will be among the highest paid athletes in the world in all sports.”Johnson added during a press conference held in Los Angeles.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone already under contract

Four athletes per group will be under contract with the “Grand Slam Track”, committing to competing in the four meetings of the season, like Olympic 400m hurdles champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the first big name revealed by the organization. “ It will shine a light on athletes, give them the opportunity to compete against the best and be rewarded for it.”appreciates the 24-year-old American.

The other four athletes will be chosen by invitation according to “their track record and current form”. “It will give power back to the athletes (…) at the same time they must understand that they must give something to receive more”commented track legend Carl Lewis, present at the launch.
