Space exploration has just crossed a new frontier with NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter, which has completed 72 flights on Mars, well beyond its initial planned mission of five flights. This technical feat made it possible to capture never-before-seen images, including a particularly striking one showing the debris of a spaceship scattered on Martian soil.
These vestiges of human origin, witnesses to our ability to reach other worlds, are reminiscent of science fiction scenes. They are the result of our efforts to explore Mars, particularly those related to the Mars 2020 mission, which saw the Perseverance rover and the Ingenuity helicopter land on the Red Planet.
The debris photographed by Ingenuity is that of the landing equipment that allowed the rover and itself to land on Mars. These images, while beautiful, raise questions about our environmental impact in space. Earth’s orbit is already cluttered with space debris, and it appears we’re starting to leave our mark on other planets.
As we continue to send satellites and other technologies into space, the issue of managing this debris becomes more and more pressing. With approximately 2,000 active and 3,000 inactive satellites orbiting Earth, not counting thousands of other pieces of debris, the risk to future space travel is real.
Perhaps one day humans will travel to Mars and begin cleaning up these vestiges of space exploration. Or perhaps we will choose to leave them there, as a memorial to our technological prowess. Regardless, the images captured by Ingenuity remind us both of our incredible capacity for innovation and the need to think about the legacy we leave in the universe.
