Rennes (AP) – In a bold move, Rennes has officially named former Argentina national team coach, Jorge Sampaolias new head coach, marking his return to French football.
Aged 64, this tactician, who previously led Marseillesigned a contract which will keep him at the club for the next eighteen months.
Sampaoli takes charge of the team following the dismissal of Julien Stephan last week, as Rennes look to reinvigorate their season after falling to a disappointing 13th place in the Ligue 1 table — 18 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain after just 11 games.
Arnaud Pouille, executive president and general manager of Rennes, expressed his confidence in Sampaoli, declaring: “He is a coach recognized internationally for his professionalism and his humanism. He has a strong attachment to his players and his staff, and is a loyal and committed man We need his energy to relaunch the club and face the competition with determination.”

Known for his dynamic coaching style, Sampaoli has an extensive background that includes stints in Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Spain and, most recently, Brazil, where he managed Flemish.
His abrupt departure from Marseille in July 2022 came after he managed to bring the team back to Champions Leaguean outcome that ended on a bitter note due to disagreements over player transfers.
