In Africa, there is absolutely no shortage of natural resources. Indeed, some countries can count on hydrocarbons to develop their economy. And the associated projects are more and more numerous. This is particularly the case in Senegal or even in Mauritania as well as in Mozambique.

On site, two oil and natural gas giants unveiled their new LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) extraction, production and export megaprojects. Indeed, ExxonMobil and BP seem to want to make Africa their new El Dorado. In any case, this is what they affirmed on the occasion of African Energy Week 2024, which was held in Cape Town, South Africa, between November 4 and 8.

ExxonMobil and BP announce major projects

These two groups actually judged that, locally, demand was growing and that everything had to be put in place to meet it. Several great projects should see the light of day, including:

  • Rovuma LNG, in Mozambique, which will make it possible to extract gas while considerably reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. 18 million tonnes per year could be produced.
  • Grande Tortue Ahmeyim, off the coast of Senegal and Mauritania, for the giant BP, which will also launch and manage the project. 2.3 million tonnes of gas per year could be produced there.

This second challenge promises to be particularly complex to set up and follow, since it straddles two countries. Legislation differs, so it will be necessary to show ingenuity to stay on track and respond favorably to the laws in force. However, a lot of work was done upstream to harmonize the project so as to make it viable over time.

Grande Tortue Ahmeyim, an exceptional project

In addition to political questions, BP also had to juggle so-called operational challenges. Indeed, it was necessary to demarcate the activity zones (exploration and production), thereby involving quite complex logistical issues and challenges. It was also necessary to distribute resources equitably so that neither Senegal nor Mauritania felt harmed in the short or long term.
