In the United States, a phenomenon has been growing in recent years: a sort of burglary tourism. Chilean gangs rob rich American properties. These robbers legally enter American territory with a three-month visa.

The operation usually takes no more than ten minutes. A small group enters a luxury property after dark and knows exactly which room to target to steal the safe. Through investigations, law enforcement discovered that these gangs are all from Chile and entered the United States legally on tourist visas.

These elaborate attacks, planned days in advance, make police work complicated. The members of these commandos are difficult to identify because they entered American territory legally. Chile, which has an agreement with the United States, allows its nationals to benefit from a 90-day visa for tourism. For the San Diego prosecutor, we must strengthen upstream controls. Special units have also been created to fight against these gangs. Several dozen arrests have taken place recently across the country.
