NÎMES The Gard Prefecture warns about forest fires

The risk of fire as summer approaches is high. The forest fire prevention and fight services of the Nîmes department are preparing for the arrival of summer.

In order to limit the risk of fire as best as possible, several rules were put in place over the period of June 15 and September 15 by a prefectural decree. It is now forbidden for everyone to have a barbecue, a fire or even light firecrackers, lanterns or even cigarettes in scrubland or wooded areas.

Regarding the works, due to the severe heat forecast, agricultural, forestry, construction, artisanal activities or activities carried out by individuals will be subject to a ban depending on the assessment of the fire risk. In addition, in the event of extreme heat records, several forest areas could be closed to access. In the event of a fire, the perpetrator(s) will be subject to sanctions. We are talking about penalties of up to three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros in the event of unintentional fire.

A call for collective vigilance

It is important to stipulate that more than 90% of forest fires are caused by humans. At present, the burned areas in Gard remain “under control” but the number of fire outbreaks is still increasing regularly. The authorities of Nîmes require compliance with the rules established in order to compensate for a summer of dangerous heat.
