The Israeli ambassador to France will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, November 12 to “provide explanations and discuss possible outcomes”announced the Quai d’Orsay on Monday. Thursday, November 7, the visit to Jerusalem by the head of French diplomacy, Jean-Noël Barrot, was marked by a diplomatic incident. The Israeli police entered “army” et “without authorization” in Eléona, a historic pilgrimage site managed by France in East Jerusalem.
Denouncing a “unacceptable situation”the minister refused to enter this place. Israeli police then briefly arrested two French gendarmes in civilian clothes. Jean-Noël Barrot very quickly warned that the Israeli ambassador to France would be summoned, without specifying the date.
The Quai d'Orsay reaffirms the position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs on Monday: “The presence of armed Israeli security in the Eléona area as well as the arrest of two personnel from the French consulate general in Jerusalem are not acceptable. France condemns them with all the more force as they intervene in a context where it is doing everything possible to work towards the de-escalation of violence in the region”.
