Monday June 10, 2024, 58 young people aged 16 to 25 were present at the RICM (Marine Tank Infantry Regiment) in Poitiers to complete their JDC. Defense and Citizenship Day (JDC) is obligatory for these young people and raises awareness of civic duties as well as the defense of the country, with the presentation of the different armies.

If the day was special and did not take place as usual at the Center for National Service and Youth, it was because it was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of France from the Nazi regime. On the occasion, a visit to the regiment museum, called the “Honour Room”, was given to the young people by Captain Christophe, “traditional officer”.

She retraced the different stages of the regiment, from its creation to the current military operations in which the RICM intervenes. The event also obtained the “Mission Libération” label from the government.

A “duty to remember”

This visit was made with the aim of “retrace the 100 years of the regiment through the different conflicts”and in particular the Second World War, during which the RICM landed in Provence. “If no one tells them about it, who will? » asks the captain, invoking a ” duty of memory “ young people so “honor their elders”.

Other so-called “adapted” JDCs but retaining a common program (French test, presentation of the armies and citizen duties) have also emerged in recent years, in connection with, for example, Women’s Rights Day or disabled people.
