World Blood Donor Day June 14

World Blood Donor Day was created twenty years ago to thank all those who donate blood throughout the year in France and around the world and to raise public awareness of this gesture of solidarity.

“Donate blood to make the heart of the world beat”, “Blood, plasma: let’s share life, let’s give often” are some of the slogans illustrating World Blood Donor Day. The 2024 slogan: “20 years of celebrating blood donation: thank you to all blood donors!”

A stock to be constantly replenished

In Berry, reserves have not been at their maximum since the start of the year. “In Indre, 500 blood bags are missing and in Cher, 700 bags”notes Stéphanie Larrère, responsible for developing collections in the Berry region for the EFS (French Blood Establishment). Blood bags have a limited lifespan: seven days for platelets and 42 days for red blood cells.

One hour to save three lives

Blood bags are necessary to transfuse patients suffering from internal or external hemorrhages during accidents or childbirth, people suffering from cancer or having an immune deficiency. To donate blood, you must be between 18 and 70 years old and weigh at least 50 kilos.. When you go to a collection point or in a Donation House, without fasting, you will meet a doctor who, after a few questions, will judge whether you are suitable to donate blood. Then you will be taken care of by nurses. The collection itself lasts less than ten minutes and you won’t leave without having a snack. One hour and three lives saved.

The website of theFrench Blood Establishment offers a eligibility testthere making appointments, a map of collection locations and lots of information. Furthermore, you can also invest in becoming a volunteer.
