Explosion in a building near Antwerp: 4 victims including a little girl, the King went to the site

Houda, a 10-year-old girl, was found in the rubble of the Antwerp building hit by an explosion yesterday evening around 8 p.m. She is the fourth victim of this tragedy. King Philippe visited the site this morning.

A fourth person was found lifeless overnight under the rubble of the building shaken by an explosion in Hoboken on Thursday, Antwerp police confirmed early Friday morning. According to our colleagues at HLN, it is Houda, a 10-year-old girl.

The search continued throughout the night and was still underway around 5 a.m. Friday. “We really want to make sure there is no one left in the building“, explained a police spokesperson.

The causes of the incident have not yet been determined. Several avenues are being examined, including an explosion due to gas. The gas distribution network manager Fluvius is present on site.

Excavations continue

The emergency services resumed the search on Friday morning to find a possible last victim.

Visit of the King

King Philip visited the scene of the explosion on Friday morning which largely destroyed an apartment building in the Antwerp district of Hoboken. He spoke in particular with the rescuers on site and was informed about the search operations for the victims.

Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden and Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever were also present alongside King Philippe.
