The Carabins of the University of Montreal won three major awards.
Defensive end Jeremiah Ojo is the winner of the Most Outstanding Lineman award. Leader of the RSEQ for a second year in a row with seven sacks and second with 7.5 tackles for losses, the product of the John Abbott Islanders had a second very good season in a row.
“My season confirmed my emergence from last year,” he said. Second in the country with seven sacks, I had a very good season. As a veteran, I wanted to be a leader on the defensive line, but also a leader off the field.”
“I am the spiritual leader of the team,” Ojo continues. Yes, there is football, but that’s not all. I am grateful to God.”
Rookie par excellence
Aged only 19, wide winger Enrique Jaimes Leclair won the title of rookie par excellence. He caught 26 passes, for five touchdowns and 475 yards, which places him second in the RSEQ.
Leclair is the sixth player in the history of the Blues to deserve this honor after Alex Cromer-Émond (2013), David Ménard (2010), Joash Gesse (2006), Martin Gagné (2005) and Maxime Gagnier (2003).
Detained in Montreal due to an exam, Leclair will however be at his post on Saturday for the Dunsmore Cup.
Most Outstanding Special Teams Player
Philippe Boyer was selected as the MVP on special teams. The third-year kicker made 20 of his 22 field goals, for a success rate of 90.9%, the best in the country. He also averaged 41.8 yards, finishing first in the RSEQ. Louis-Philippe Simoneau, in 2018, as well as Félix Ménard-Brière, in 2016 and 2017, also won this honor for the Blues.
The performance of kickers in the RSEQ has jumped in recent years. “The quality is increasing and it shows the importance of kickers in Canadian football.”
Injured on October 19 during the last game of the regular schedule at Concordia, Boyer did not face the McGill Redbirds in the semi-final. Will he be in uniform for the Dunsmore Cup?
“We’ll see on Saturday if I’m on the field or not.” Rookie Étienne Jacques did well in the victory against the Redbirds.
