During the Xbox Summer Game Fest conference, Square Enix made an appearance to reveal the trailer for one of their upcoming games. If we thought we’d have news of Visions of Mana – which finally arrived a few days later – the studio preferred to reveal to us a preview of the next opus of the saga Life Is Strange. The game was taken over by Deck Nine and offers us a new narrative adventure, with a familiar heroine and supernatural powers.

Even more powerful than before

The first trailer for Life Is Strange Double Exposure showed us Max Caulfield, the main character of the franchise’s first title. Her student life is now behind her, as she begins a new chapter in her life with friends we don’t yet meet. Sophie is one of them, and she appears to be a loyal friend of Max… before she is brutally murdered.

The Square Enix showcase tells us today that Double Exposure will take on the appearance of a murder party, in which Max will become a budding investigator. The murder of his friend is extremely mysterious, there is no weapon or suspect, and only Sophie’s body can help him understand the circumstances of this tragic event. Fortunately, the young woman can count on her powers to disentangle the true from the false, and save Sophie.

Unlike the first game where Max had the ability to go back in time for very short periods, here she develops an even more useful skill. She can now wander into parallel dimensions, where Sophie’s death has not yet occurred. She must therefore solve puzzles, collect clues and make the link between several events to elucidate the mystery. The developers tell us that this is actually an extension of his initial power, giving the game a welcome sense of progression and continuity.

From the old to make something new

The studio not only recycled one of their flagship characters, but also built bridges between the two stories in order to attract new and old players alike. Visually, Life Is Strange Double Exposure sticks to its initial artistic direction, with a real impression of modernity in terms of animations and motion capture. The conference is an opportunity to learn more about the developers’ intentions with regard to the characters, but also about the people involved in the design of the game that will arrive on your platforms next October 29. Note that it will be available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
