In Gaza, a school run by the United Nations transformed into a shelter for displaced people was attacked by an Israeli strike.

At least 14 people were killed and dozens more injured.

The Israeli military said the building in the Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City, was used by Hamas to plan and carry out attacks against Israel.

Israel has long accused UNRWA of turning a blind eye to the presence of Hamas militants among its personnel and allowing the group to use its facilities for military purposes.

The contingent also said it had taken measures to limit the risk of harming civilians, including using precise munitions and employing aerial surveillance.

The United Nations said in September that about 85 percent of Gaza’s schools had been hit or damaged, with many requiring major reconstruction work to be able to function again.

The United Nations Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) said 70% of the schools it administers have been affected and 95% of them are being used as shelters.
