According to Brazilian media, Al Hilal could terminate Neymar’s contract as early as January, six months before the end of his contract.
Since starting his career in Saudi Arabia in August 2023, Neymar has only played seven matches for Al-Hilal, with his playing career at a standstill. At the time of his shock move from PSG, the Brazilian had a reputation as one of the best players in world football, and was duly rewarded with a contract that made him the third highest-paid player.
But just 15 months after following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, whose eyes lit up at the sight of the Saudi Pro League’s ambitious plan to shake up Europe’s long-established order, the 32-year-old is suddenly finds himself closer to the exit door than to the rediscovery of his former glory. As reported by the Daily Mail, Neymar faces being fired in January because, although he has only played a few times, he has actually earned a huge income.
Financially, Al-Hilal clearly cannot find his way there, after having put 90 million euros on the table to recruit him, in addition to a salary of 160 million euros per season. In total, Neymar only played 7 matches, for one goal and 2 assists. Not to mention the fact that there are a limited number of places for foreign players, and management doesn’t want to waste one on a player who gets injured regularly.
Al-Hilal are reportedly considering a mutual termination of Neymar’s contract in January to ease their salary burden and give coach Jorge Jesus more flexibility with his squad. Neymar is one of eight foreign players over the age of 21 in Al-Hilal’s squad, reaching the limit for foreign imports under Saudi Pro League regulations.
