By promising peace in Ukraine during his campaign, Trump put a lot of pressure on himself.

According to the Wall Street Journal, his advisers are competing on strategies for a negotiated solution, marking a break with Biden’s support for kyiv.

Different strategies on the table

The Wall Street Journal reveals that one option would be to freeze the front line and to ask Ukraine to suspend its NATO membership for 20 yearswhile maintaining themilitary aid without American troops on site.

“We will not send Americans to Europe to secure peace in Ukraine,” explains an advisor, who proposes entrusting this role to European soldiers to maintain a demilitarized zone.

Another option, defended by Richard Grenell, is to suspend arms deliveries as long as Ukraine does not engage in negotiations with Moscow. This approach aims to push kyiv to the discussion table to potentially recover territories through diplomacy, even if it means making territorial concessions.

Weaken the Western alliance?

It remains to be seen how Trump will implement any of these options. Ukraine, dependent on US support, may be forced to negotiate.

However, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen reiterated that no negotiations should take place without Ukraine’s agreement. Such a peace plan could weaken the Western alliance, which sees Russia as a threat.

Domestically, the prospect of concessions to Russia could raise opposition in the United States and NATO, notes the Wall Street Journal.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, dependent on American aid, congratulated Trump on his election, while saying he would maintain an “equal dialogue.” For the moment, a return to negotiations remains unlikely.
