München – During Bayern’s match against Lisbon, silence reigned in the stands. The reason: a medical emergency on the terrace. The fan died in hospital.

FC Bayern Munich’s victory in the Champions League match against Benfica Lisbon was overshadowed by a tragic event. Around an hour after the final whistle, the German champions received “the sad news” that a fan had died on the way to hospital. Emergency medical assistance was provided in the stands shortly after kick-off and the fan was then transported.

“FC Bayern is in mourning with loved ones,” the club wrote on its website. Out of respect, the Bayern fans in the South Court forewent their usual loud support for the team during the match. “There are certainly more important things in life than football,” said sports director Max Eberl. He noted that fans had shown appropriate respect through their actions.

“After the match we didn’t celebrate much. The boys only found out about it after the match,” coach Vincent Kompany said before the death announcement was made. After the final whistle, the stadium announcer also briefed the packed 75,000-seat arena about the incident and explained why fans had held back their applause. The music was also more subdued than usual after the victory, which was secured by a Jamal Musiala header.

“When something like this happens, it’s also a nice sign of solidarity that the fans don’t have their own party but show a sign of humanity,” commented Bayern veteran Thomas Müller.

Captain Manuel Neuer also expressed his condolences. “We are very sorry, and we did not celebrate exuberantly in the dressing room after this victory,” said the goalkeeper. “We feel for the fan or the person.”
