When a cocktail wins its elections…

The bar Le Jardin Cocktails & Bières (formerly known as Jules & Jim) invited its customers to an election evening on Tuesday to enjoy a few drinks while following the counting of votes in the United States. “The Montcalm district is a hub political, so we wanted to continue this mission in the area and in our bar in particular,” explains Émile Lebel, boss of SG Lebel and owner of several bars in the region.

For the occasion, we reworked and renamed two classic cocktails. Candidate Donald Trump was represented by a bourbon-based bloody mary, “reinvented and easy to drink”, red like the Republican Party. Aspirant Kamala Harris was given a floral cocktail made of gin, curaçao and green-blue citrus juice, in the image of the Democratic Party.

The concept: a small competition – politically neutral – to determine which of the two politicians would “sell” the most cocktails. Who finally won this funny and unscientific duel?

“People have drunk a lot more Trump than Harris! proclaims Mr. Lebel. People celebrated quite a bit! That said, if Harris had led the night and won [l’élection]we would undoubtedly have sold more Harris.”

The customers therefore toasted in agreement with the real result of Tuesday evening, which allowed Donald Trump to win the presidential election.

The formula pleased the owner of the Garden, who promises to repeat the experience. “This is the first time we’ve tried this. It was a beautiful evening. We will do it again, since it really worked,” assures Mr. Lebel.

So when can policy-hungry people toast Canada's next federal election?
