Taking advantage of its presence at the 2023 Utopiales, the Actusf de l’Uchronie Prize team presented its award to Mary Robinette Kowal, 2023 winner for her novel Sur la Lune.
The opportunity also for a short interview conducted by Karine Gobled, the president of the prize, translated by Stéphanie Chaptal. A great time to come back to this wonderful book!
Here is the summary of the novel:
“On Earth, the situation is critical: the climate is inexorably deteriorating and political tensions are increasing. An international coalition hopes to send as many people as possible to Mars before the blue planet becomes uninhabitable, but it is obvious that everyone world will not be able to leave. The demonstrations against the space conquest project turn into riots and attempts to sabotage the rockets are brought to light.
The FBI now fears a large-scale attack targeting the lunar colony, the first step towards Mars, which would definitively doom the space program. Nicole Wargin, one of the first female astronauts, friend of Elma York, is entrusted with an emergency mission to thwart him on the spot. Unfortunately, the time is rather bad to leave Earth: her husband, governor of Kansas, is considering running for the new White House. With Elma halfway to Mars, if Nicole fails, humanity’s survival could be in jeopardy.
With On the Moon, Mary Robinette Kowal gives a new direction to her “Lady Astronaut” series: science fiction is tinged with thriller and espionage. Politics, betrayal, attacks and assassination attempts spice up this new adventure which can be read independently of the previous ones.”
