Opposed to Thiago Monteiro in the first round of the ATP 250 in Metz this Monday evening, Richard Gasquet had to save a match point to win his first victory on the main circuit since Roland‐Garros (last May 28 against Borna Coric).
In comments reported by The Team after his victory in three sets, 4–6, 6–4, 7–6(6), the Frenchman, who will retire next spring, did not hide his relief.
“He’s a player who plays better on clay so I knew I had my chances. I started badly but managed to fight and the end of the match was very difficult. I saw myself losing this match. It's nice to be able to win a match on the circuit, it's been a while since that happened to me, and to experience some emotions with this saved match point. Because this year, it wasn't crazy. I have won more than 600 matches in my career but in 2024 I have won four, it is very, very few. Pfff… it’s weak (he smiles). The end of the film is never easy, otherwise you don't stop. So it's nice to be able to win this match, even if it remains difficult, 7–6 in the third, the end was physically tough. »
Note that in the round of 16, Ritchie will face the young American, Alex Michelsen (44e world).
