Due to torrential rains and the risk of flooding, the Catalan authorities have decreed a total traffic ban for all non-essential travel in several areas in the south of the region, including the AP-7 motorway, a major axis. This measure comes into force at midnight this Monday, November 4 and until at least 2 p.m.
The ban applies particularly on the AP-7, a key axis connecting the main cities of the south, as well as on the roads serving the areas of Tarragona and the Ebro, where rainfall is the most intense. “We ask residents to stay home and follow restrictions for their own safety», indicated the authorities. This travel ban, effective at midnight, is planned until 2 p.m. today but could be extended depending on weather conditions.
Catalan authorities have warned that torrential rains could reach up to 40 liters per square meter in less than 30 minutes, risking saturating road infrastructure and local waterways. In addition to traffic restrictions on the AP-7 and other axes, all school, sporting and cultural activities are suspended in alert areas. Schools, universities and sports centers will remain closed until further notice.
The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has strengthened alerts for these areas, specifying that thunderstorms could further worsen the situation in the coming hours. Residents of the most affected regions are invited to follow the safety instructions issued by the authorities. “Compliance with restrictions is crucial to avoid any accident in this context of maximum alert», recalled the Catalan officials.
The Catalan government has warned that violators face sanctions. To allow residents to follow the evolution of this exceptional episode, the authorities are broadcasting information and safety instructions in real time on the official Catalonia website.
