The two stars of American cinema took part in the D-Day commemorations this Thursday, June 6 in Normandy.

Hollywood comes to Normandy. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, two figures of American cinema, took part this Thursday, June 6, in the ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The actor of Forrest Gump and the director ofAND landed at Caen-Carpiquet airport the evening before. They participated this Thursday in the American ceremony in Colleville-sur-Mer in the company of Emmanuel Macron, American President Joe Biden and his wife Jill, as well as veterans.

“If we add up all these individual stories, which are a Source of inspiration, the lesson to be learned is that this must not happen again,” Tom Hanks told BFMTV on the sidelines of the ceremony.

Historical episode brought to the screen

The presence of the two cinema superstars at this ceremony is no coincidence: Tom Hanks played the leading role ofWe have to save the soldier Ryan, a cult film by Steven Spielberg released in 1998, the plot of which took place during the Landings. On the occasion of this 80th anniversary, the feature film will be released in 300 cinemas in France this Thursday, June 6.

In addition, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks had already attended D-Day tribute ceremonies in 2004 for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Other ceremonies took place during the day, notably in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach. Many artistic, political and media personalities took part: the Ukrainian President Volodymyr ZelenskyAmerican head of state Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as actors Lambert Wilson and Charlotte Rampling.
