While the American presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris promises to be closer than ever, inflation could work in favor of the Republican candidate. Americans are indeed pointing the finger at the increase in prices in supermarkets, as in the state of Georgia, one of the seven “swing states” in the election.
“Trump, low price, Kamala, high price”: the slogan of the Republican candidate in the US presidential election sums up the thoughts of Ina, 78, who leaves a supermarket in Macon in Georgia, one of the seven key states (or “swing states”) which can swing the vote. “I bought hamburger steak today. Before, it was between $3 and $5 a pound, now it’s $8. It’s all gone! It’s awful,” she whispers. at the microphone of Europe 1, adding that “Trump, absolutely, he is the only one who can fix this.”
Three days before “election day”, which promises to be historically close between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, the surge in prices that began post-Covid (2021) at the start of Joe Biden’s mandate is playing a major role in the presidential campaign , and it stands out as a handicap for the Democrats.
“I just prefer to stay away from it all.”
Behind Ina, Jemarcus checks his receipt and agrees. “$109 for these races. Before Covid, it would have cost $85,” says this 30-year-old man, who now has to “make a choice”: “Do I put gas in my car to go at work? Do I make this expense now or later?”
However, there will not be this choice for this supermarket employee. “Actually, I prefer not to vote this year,” he concedes. “I voted in the last election for Joe Biden, but things are not getting better. So, I just prefer to stay away from all that,” confides this employee. “America must help its people,” concludes this new abstainer, resigned.
