Deadly explosion and arrests, Greece faces a “new generation of terrorists”

Greek anti-terrorism police have arrested a man suspected of being linked to the deadly explosion of a homemade bomb in an apartment in the capital last Thursday.

The incident cost the life of a 36-year-old man, known to the police, and seriously injured a 33-year-old woman. Athens investigators speak of a “new generation of terrorists” and are stepping up their efforts in the face of a growing terrorist threat.

A tragic incident

The explosion, believed to be accidental, shook a residential area of Athens, killing a man from the port city of Piraeus. Authorities confirmed his identification via body fragments found at the scene. This individual, already involved in legal cases in Germany, appeared in the Europol database, which quickly allowed the police to confirm his identity as reported by 20 Minutes.

The injured woman, aged 33, is currently hospitalized under the supervision of the authorities. An investigation was opened against him for alleged membership of a terrorist organization. A second woman, aged 30 and also suspected in this case, is actively sought by the police.

An in-depth investigation

The man arrested on Saturday presented himself to the police the day before. The authorities suspect him of having a link with the two wanted women. Although he denied any involvement in the explosion, his arrest led to a search of the apartment where investigators discovered handguns, wigs, and masks, items often associated with clandestine circles.

Greece facing the anarchist threat

For a decade, Greece has been regularly shaken by violent acts, including arson and attacks targeting financial, diplomatic and political institutions. Greek police point the finger at radical anarchists, accused of carrying out these acts to destabilize the country. The recent arrests reignite debates on the resurgence of a terrorist movement, with local groups becoming radicalized and adopting increasingly violent methods.

Counter-terrorism authorities, supported by Europol, are continuing their investigations to identify the networks involved and prevent future attacks.
