McLaren unplayable in qualifying?
With the drop in temperatures between practice and Sprint qualifying on Friday, the cooler conditions perfectly favored McLaren, allowing Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to shine. The difference between the two drivers was minimal, but Piastri's second lap on soft tires was enough for him to take the pole positionjust ahead of championship candidate Norris.
Their advantage was particularly sharp in slow cornerswhere they were the fastest, ahead of the Ferraris and the Red Bulls. McLaren also had the advantage in mid-speed corners and on the straights, although it lost some ground in the fast corners.
However, although they also dominated long-run simulations, their lead narrowed against Ferrari, making the Italian team a serious threatespecially for the Grand Prix rather than for qualifying.
Ferrari can nurture ambitions
Ferrari has revived the battle for the constructors' championship with an impressive result (1st and 3rd places) in Mexico, reducing the gap with the leaders McLaren to 29 pointswith four race weekends still remaining. They were unable to reproduce their excellent performance in qualifying in Mexico (1st and 2nd places) this weekend, but the third place by Charles Leclerc and the fifth of Carlos Sainz show that they are well on the pace to challenge the British team.
The gaps remain minimal and, like all year, Ferrari shows itself more formidable in racing configurationthanks in particular to a clear improvement in tire management.
Although the McLaren performs well in slow corners, Ferrari competes in medium and fast corners as well as on the straights. This gives them strong hopes of fight for a victory at the Grand Prix tomorrow, even if the task could be more difficult in the upcoming qualifications.
