British nationalist Nigel Farage launched his campaign for the legislative elections on Tuesday in Clacton-on-Sea by calling on his supporters to join a “people’s army against the establishment”.

In this town, the population voted en masse in 2016 for Brexit, fiercely defended by this emblematic figure of the British hard right, Nigel Farage, is on favorable ground. Or almost: a 25-year-old woman doused him with a milkshake in front of a pub where he had just spoken to the press. She was arrested shortly after on suspicion of assault.

On Monday, the former MEP, host for three years of a political program on the conservative television channel GB news, created a surprise by announcing his candidacy in this constituency of Essex, after having assured ten days earlier that ‘he wouldn’t show up.

He, who has already tried unsuccessfully seven times to be elected MP, represents a serious threat to the Conservative Party, already well behind Labor in the polls and whose divisions he could increase.

According to a YouGov poll published on Monday, the Labor Party could achieve the biggest victory in its history on July 4, much larger than that of Tony Blair in 1997. According to the average of the polls, Nigel Farage’s party is credited with 11% voting intention, compared to 24% for the Conservatives and 45% for Labor.
