The Kolda region has recorded 390 cases of bushfires over the last five years, or an average of 78 cases per year, said Wednesday the deputy governor, Mariame Pouye Anne Kouyaté.

“The Kolda region has experienced 390 cases of bush fires over the last five years, or an average of 78 cases per year,” she said during the official ceremony celebrating World Environment Day. , in Kolda.

The deputy governor invited people to protect the environment against bush fires which “are recurrent” in the Kolda region.

“This is why, faced with the challenges, we also call on the entire community to protect our environment,” she added.

Ms. Kouyaté further indicated that the Kolda region is confronted with trafficking and excessive logging, which has harmful consequences on agriculture, the destruction of the ecosystem and climate change.

She praised the mobilization of community stakeholders, decentralized services and the involvement of young people in preserving the environment.

The celebration of this symbolic day is important for the Kolda region where there are real environmental protection issues, said the deputy governor.

A hike and symbolic reforestation were organized in Kolda on the occasion of the celebration of World Environment Day on the theme: “Land restoration, desertification and resilience to drought”.
