Supporting sustainable waste management in Rabat and Kénitra
SUEZ and its partners SOMAGEC and JET CONTRACTORS announce the entry into force of the contract with the Intercommunal Cooperation Establishment AL ASSIMA for the construction and operation of the Oum Azza waste treatment and recovery center in the Rabat region.
This center, which receives 850,000 tonnes of waste per year from the 13 municipalities of the Rabat-Salé area (more than 2 million inhabitants), will thus become a “green landfill”, that is to say a center of waste treatment which contributes to the circular economy. Less than half of the waste received will be landfilled (47%). Liquid residues (leachate) will be subject to exemplary treatment, which will notably enable the production of biogas.
In addition, SUEZ is awarded the contract for management of the Kenitra waste treatment and recovery centerone of the largest cities in the country with almost 500,000 inhabitants. Worth 120 million euros over 20 years, this contract provides for the establishment of a new site, which will also become a “green landfill”. Waste will no longer only be buried but also converted into local and sustainable energy. In doing so, SUEZ supports the industrial transformation of the site by investing in infrastructure for the recovery of biogas produced by the fermentation of waste.
The Kenitra center will be the third “green landfill” operated by SUEZ in Morocco, after Rabat and Meknes. The Meknes waste treatment and recovery site, the first “green landfill” created by SUEZ in the country, today produces 5,500 MWh/year and has thus achieved energy self-sufficiency.
Agreements to improve the performance of water networks and support research in water and waste.
SUEZ has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Moroccan Safari Group, with a view to creating a joint venture. This company will provide Regional Multiservice Companies with innovative and digital solutions for optimizing the management of water networks.
Finally, SUEZ will carry out, in partnership with the MAScIR Foundation, associated with the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), a research program relating to the treatment and valorization of organic materials. This is a continuation of the agreement signed by the MAScIR Foundation and SUEZ in March 2024 in order to identify innovative solutions in the treatment and recovery of waste. The Group will also extend this convention to the field of water managementand more particularly to that of seawater desalination.
