The alert was given at midday, when the octogenarian's car was seen parked at the port of Canet-en-Roussillon, near the aquarium and the ferris wheel. Soldiers from the Saint-Cyprien nautical brigade and those from the SNSM then dove into the port in search of the missing person.

His lifeless body was finally found at the bottom of the water and then recovered. The old man could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation concluded that it was a suicide.
