In the first half of 2024, the average price of electricity for households in the European Union stands at 28.9 euros per 100 kWh, marking a slight increase compared to the second half of 2023, according to Eurostat. This increase comes despite a general drop in energy costs, which governments have not fully passed on, having reduced subsidies and tax cuts.

Electricity price differences by country

EU countries show significant differences in the cost of electricity for households. Germany records the highest rate with 39.5 euros per 100 kWh, followed by Ireland and Denmark. On the other hand, Hungary, Bulgaria and Malta have the lowest prices. Belgium is at the top of the ranking with a price of 33.54 euros per 100 kWh, highlighting the impact of national policies on the final cost for consumers.

Fall in gas prices in some EU countries

At the same time, the average price of domestic gas in the EU fell by 7% in one year. This reduction, however, remains hampered by an increase in taxes in several countries. Lithuania, Greece and Estonia recorded the largest price falls, while increases were seen in Italy, and Romania, illustrating regional disparities in the evolution of energy costs for households.
