On August 8, 2022, a microlight crashed in Cambaie, causing one victim and one seriously injured. This was an instructional flight as part of the final approach to land the aircraft. Following damage, the student pilot and his instructor crashed shortly after the runway at Cambaie aerodrome. The instructor did not survive the accident. In the summary of the report which follows, the Bureau of Investigations and Accidents (BEA) highlights a problem with a poorly secured seat as well as a more feasible low speed and low altitude maneuver.

The loss of control of the ULM occurred during final approach while the pilot was in an instruction situation. One of the educational objectives of this instruction session was the achievement of S terrain taking (PTS), reduced engine.

The tailwind component present during this exercise may have encouraged the pilot to tighten the turns. Just before the loss of control, the ULM was at a low height, close to the threshold of the runway and off-axis to the right of it. This seems to indicate that the exercise was no longer feasible to complete safely. The investigation was unable to explain the reasons which led the instructor not to interrupt the exercise earlier. However, it is possible that the lack of locking of the seat back prevented the instructor from effectively taking over the controls (or interfered with the pilot’s actions).

The company manager informed the instructor of the missing left seat locking bar and placed 974PQ in another locked hangar. However, the instructor minimized the risks associated with not locking the seat and decided to carry out the flight on this ULM so as not to disturb the people seated in front of the club hangar and blocking access to the two other Fk9s.
