The Maghreb Arab Press Agency (MAP) was awarded, Wednesday May 29, in Bahrain, among the press organs which won the Prize of Excellence for Arab Media, during a ceremony organized on the sidelines of the 54th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Information.

The Moroccan press agency, MAP, stood out in this 8th edition, in the “Best column” category of the written press, with the article “I will call it Houcine: Story of a life saved in the womb of a survivor” by its author Mohamed Aswab.

The article tells the story of Lakbira, a resident of the Assaiss douar (nearly 96 km from Taroudant, south-west Morocco), survivor of the Al Haouz earthquake who was brought home safe and sound, still carrying in her belly a living fetus.

It describes the courage and tenacity of this woman, from the rescue attempts by the rescue teams to her transfer to the field surgical hospital set up by the Royal Armed Forces in the commune of Tafingoult, where she underwent an ultrasound which revealed that the fetus, a seven-month-old male, was healthy, which she later named Houcine.

The paper also highlights the efforts made by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, the services of the Ministry of the Interior, the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), the Auxiliary Forces, Civil Protection, the Royal Gendarmerie and the services of relief and health services to help victims of the earthquake which shook the region on September 8, 2023.

The National Broadcasting and Television Company (SNRT), for its part, won the Arab Media Excellence Award in the category of “Best radio investigation”, with the story of a child who lost his sheep and its shelter, following the Al Haouz earthquake.

The Arab Media Excellence Award, in its eighth edition, was organized this year under the theme “Media of Crises, Disasters and Risks”.

The head of the media and communications department of the Arab League, Ahmed Rachid Khattabi indicated, on this occasion, that the general secretariat of the Arab League had launched this prize in 2016 to support and encourage the efforts of Arab journalists, and highlight their constructive contributions to highlighting important issues for the Arab nation.

He explained that the Prize, which rewards media professionals in four categories (television, radio, written press and digital media), aims to highlight distinguished media models in the Arab world and encourage healthy emulation.

Khattabi further indicated that this year’s edition saw the participation of more than 100 works in the different categories, which were submitted to a commission where Member States are represented, stressing that the Prize, over the years seven previous editions, saw the consecration of works with greater participation of women, young people and people with disabilities.
