Women banned from aeronautical companies

“As in other sectors of society, the presence of women in aeronautics is a long road strewn with pitfalls, but cleared by pugnacious and courageous women. Certainly, previously, a few female aeronauts had been able to practice ascents in hot air balloon or gas balloon, but this remained very marginal,” explains the ACDF.

When the first aeronautical companies emerged at the end of the 19th century, women were not not allowed to join it. Their presence is only tolerated in the bullet pods, and in presence of their husband member. “It was not until October 1904 that the General Assembly of the Aeronautics Club of France authorized the “Ladies” to join with the same rights and advantages and the same obligations as male members. However, they cannot be part of the Steering Committee,” recalls the ACDF.

The month of November 1904 saw the first female members register with the ACDF.
