“Eric” on Netflix. What is the new series with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role worth?

Abandoning Marvel (and his character Doctor Strange), Benedict Cumberbatch plays a father adrift in the new thriller Netflix. This is a strange crime series around the disappearance of a 9-year-old boy.

Creator of a children’s show with puppets (variation of the show Sesame Street), Vincent is a misanthropic alcoholic, full of himself and not really happy. But when his son Edgar suddenly disappears on the way to school, and the police are there, he is the one who sets out on his trail, with the help of a big blue teddy bear named Eric.

Obviously, Eric does not exist, except in Vincent’s head. A sort of outlet in the shape of a giant teddy bear, it allows him to bear his daily suffering, his hatred of others, so as not to let himself be crushed by the weight of grief and to continue searching. It must be said that her boy vanished into a particularly filthy New York, where rotten cops, shameless politicians and an entire population of destitute people taking refuge underground, in the subway galleries intersect.

A narrative that is too scattered to convince

In this sticky atmosphere, the story imagined by British screenwriter Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Shame) combines a host of themes, ranging from the poverty of America in the 1980s to the oppression of the capitalist system, including racial inequalities and the scathing homophobia of the time. Eric has a lot to say. Too much, no doubt. Sometimes leaning towards the side of Zodiac by Fincher, sometimes by Birdman by Iñárritu, the narration goes in all directions. And from this excess of ambition is born the feeling that Eric, the stuffed animal, is ultimately nothing more than a useless and cumbersome artifice for a Benedict Cumberbatch strikingly melancholy.

Six episodes, on Netflix.
