13 years before Game Of Thrones entered television history with an equally surprising and shocking scene, the author of the saga, George RR Martin, was already facing indignant reactions…

Multiple poisonings, massacres and other atrocious sessions of abuse, humiliation, fight to the death between family clans, relentless vengeance… Welcome to the world of George RR Martin, the revered creator of Game of Thrones!

It is an understatement to say that the series created by the duo DB Weiss and David Benioff deeply left its mark on the history of the small screen, between 2011 and 2019. Ultimately, what does it matter that many fans have criticized the series for its conclusion? sloppy. And not just the fans either; some actors in the series were disappointed with an ending considered too quick.

Among the oh-so-memorable sequences of the series is very, very high, the one which takes place in episode 9 of season 3. If it is titled in French The Rains of Castamerethe episode is otherwise known as the Red Wedding.

Viewers discovered, absolutely horrified and stunned by the extreme violence of the sequence, the massacre of the Starks and all their men present, orchestrated by the vile Walder Frey and Roose Bolton. Talisa Maegyr, Robb’s pregnant bride, was disembowelled; Catelyn and Robb Stark were hit by crossbow bolts, ending up stabbed and having their throats cut.

A paralyzing and chilling bloodbath, to watch again below, if you feel like it…

If there is one who was obviously not at all surprised by the horrified reactions of the spectators, it was George RR Martin, because he had written this sequence in volume 3 of his aga. In an interview given to Entertainment Weekly in 2013, shortly after the broadcast of this episode of the series, the author explained that the disastrous destiny of Robb and Catelyn Stark had already shocked readers at the time.

“It’s the hardest scene I’ve ever had to write.”

“I like my fiction to be unpredictable. I like it when there’s a lot of tension. I killed Ned in the first book and it shocked a lot of people. I killed Ned precisely because everyone thought that he was the hero, that of course he would get into trouble but he would somehow get out of it The obvious consequence. [de la mort de Ned] would have been that his eldest son would rise up and avenge his father. Everyone would expect it. So killing Robb was immediately the next thing I had to do.

“It’s the hardest scene I’ve ever had to write.” continues Martin, “It was like murdering two of your children.” No regrets on his part, quite the contrary. “It’s probably the strongest scene in the books. It cost me a few readers, but I gained a lot of new ones.”
