An unprecedented movement is currently taking place within the space program. For the first time, a NASA satellite, intended to measure in detail heat loss at the Earth’s poles, was launched from New Zealand on May 25. Code name: PREFIRE. This project aims to improve climate forecasts, by bringing a new dimension to the current models used by scientists.

A mission of scientific precision

The PREFIRE project, comprising two satellites, stands out for its ability to collect crucial information. These satellites, the size of a shoebox, are launched by the Electron rocket from the company Rocket Lab. Their mission is to measure the heat released into space from the Arctic and Antarctica.

Until now, climate models were mainly based on theories. These new measurements will provide real data, allowing a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of heat loss. According to Tristan L’Ecuyer of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, this is crucial for balancing excess heat received from tropical regions.

Impact of heat loss

The poles have an essential role in regulating the earth’s temperature. Heat loss influences global weather. PREFIRE will increase our ability to simulate future sea level rise and climate change at the poles.

NASA will use this new data to understand how clouds, humidity and melting ice influence heat loss. Satellites like PREFIRE make it possible to answer very targeted questions. They add a more specialized view which complements that of general satellites.
