The rumor of a possible “web eraser” integrated into Safari 18 continues to make waves. Following the example of their British colleagues, French media and advertisers sent a letter to Tim Cook to express their concern, reports The echoes.

According to AppleInsider, the next major version of Safari will have an “eraser” function allowing the user to erase any content on a web page, just by selecting it. Ad blockers already have this type of function and Safari iOS has been compatible with blockers for around ten years. So what’s new under the sun?

“It is obvious that this functionality amounts to integrating an “ad blocker” by default into the Safari browser in order to block all advertising for an indefinite period”, write Alliance Digitale, Udecam, le Geste, SRI, Union des Marques and Apig. If there is no need for an extension to block ads, these players fear a mass increase in the practice and further losses of revenue, knowing that Safari iOS accounts for around a quarter of mobile traffic in France.

Although the feature is only a rumor at this stage, the signatories are already threatening by reminding Apple that some of them have already gone to court for this type of case. While the Geste (which represents, among others, Arte, Canal+, France Télévisions, The Team And Le Figaro) and advertisers have filed a complaint against Apple concerning the advertising framework put in place since iOS 14.5, the Competition Authority opened an investigation on the subject last year for a possible abuse of dominant position.
