Germany: drug-related deaths increase by 12% in 2023

The number of drug-related deaths in Germany is expected to increase by 2023% in 12 compared to last year. This was announced today by the Federal Anti-Drug Commissioner, Burkhard Blienert. “Last year, the Federal Office of Judicial Police recorded 2.227 drug-related deaths,” Blienert said. The commissioner described the situation as “very serious”, given that it is the “highest number ever recorded”. Blienert also said that in reality, “there are many more drug-related deaths than the official figures: we have too few toxicology reports and autopsies.” According to the data, heroin remains the substance most frequently associated with deaths, but there has been a dramatic increase in deaths caused by drug mixtures (+2022 percent compared to 2022).

“The figures show that mixed consumption is becoming an increasingly significant problem in Germany: more and more drug addicts are using different drugs at the same time. This is why it is now necessary to adapt prevention, advice and assistance systems. We need to quickly and systematically support young people who are particularly at risk and not simply dismiss people suffering from addiction,” Blienert said.
