“We narrowly avoided the tragedy”: his crazy race ends on the steps of Rodez cathedral, what we know

Aged 55, living in Aveyron and unknown to the police, the motivations of the individual who hit the steps of Rodez Cathedral remain, for the moment, unclear. Even if, a few hours earlier, he poured out his hatred on social networks against religions, the police or politicians.

A few hours before the events, Tuesday May 28, 2024 in the afternoon, the person who was at the wheel of the vehicle which hit the steps of Rodez Cathedral was publishing content that was, to say the least, hateful on social networks. Whether towards religion, which he describes as “shit”; “the corrupt cops and all the politicians”, as well as the doctors. He warns: “War is at your gates.”

Still a little earlier, he even wrote: “This afternoon in Rodez, ‘open dance’ in the streets. I will be there”. So what were the motivations of this 55-year-old individual, domiciled in Aveyron, of French origin, and unknown to the police? If for the moment they remain unclear, his journey would have started near Olemps where he hit a car on the RN88, before continuing in the streets of Rodez. The shocked driver of the car was only slightly injured in the accident.

Afterwards, he also allegedly drove down Avenue Victor-Hugo, on the part reserved for pedestrians.

“We narrowly avoided the tragedy”

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although usually at this time of day, Avenue Victor-Hugo, like the area around the cathedral, is particularly busy. Before being arrested by the Ruthenian police officers, the individual, after hitting the steps of the cathedral, wandered around, bare-chested and with numerous tattoos on his body, on rue Penavayre where passers-by alerted the police.

His behavior seemed aggressive to those who may have crossed his path. He was taken by the police to the Jacques-Puel hospital center for control examinations. “We narrowly avoided the tragedy,” whispered the city’s mayor, Christian Teyssèdre. For his part, the prefect of Aveyron, Charles Giusti praised the action and the composure of the police.
