“Very difficult negotiations” if Trump returns to power, warns a Canadian diplomat

“He [Donald Trump] put tariff rates on steel and aluminum, and had them removed. It was work, but we did it. If we have to have very difficult negotiations, once again, we are ready to do it,” said the Canadian ambassador to the United States on Tuesday in Montreal.

Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, made this statement in a press scrum before a speech to the Council on International Relations of Montreal (CORIM), in a large Montreal hotel.

Earlier this year, Justin Trudeau said that working with Donald Trump had not been easy, and that “if there is a second time, it won’t be easy either.”

Protectionist people»

More than 74% of Quebec exports go to the United States; some 400,000 jobs here are linked to the country’s trade, recalled diplomat Kirsten Hillman.

“They are still a protectionist people, whether Democratic or Republican, and have been for a very long time,” she analyzed in impeccable French.

In recent days, owners of Quebec SMEs have expressed fear that the arrival of Trump will spoil the party by preventing them from selling their products in the United States if protectionism goes too far.

“Many already feel obliged to have a factory there… if we have more, they can no longer sell their products, it won’t be fun,” denounced one of them under the cover of anonymity.

Enough electricity

While electricity is becoming scarcer in Quebec for our industrial projects, are American companies afraid of running out?

“I haven’t really heard of that. It has not been raised yet,” concluded the ambassador.
