More people will die because medical evacuations from the Gaza Strip have completely stopped since Israeli bombing of Rafah began three weeks ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.

Since Israel began bombing the town of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip in early May, “all medical evacuations have abruptly stopped”, meaning more people are dying while waiting for treatment, the statement said. WHO spokesperson, Margaret Harris. Before the war broke out, 50 to 100 people left Gaza every day to benefit from complex treatments, particularly for cancer, which were not available in the Palestinian territory. “These people did not leave simply because the conflict started, they therefore need follow-up,” pointed out the representative, interviewed by journalists in Geneva.

These evacuations are all the more urgent as Gaza’s health infrastructure has been devastated since the start of hostilities. Consequently, an even greater number of people need to leave to access treatments (chemotherapy, dialysis, etc.) from which they previously benefited in the territory. Thousands of other Palestinians seriously traumatized by the war must be evacuated, Margaret Harris also stressed. In all, “some 10,000 people must be evacuated (…) to receive the medical treatment they so badly need”, she concluded.
